Mary Lace.   2.15pm alternate Thursdays, at Seminar room, 4th Floor, Central Library, (but first check with ground floor reception). £2 charge per session.
January 21   American Painting 1900-1956
February 4, 18   American Painting 1900-1956
March 4, 18   American Painting 1900-1956
At the end of the Depression and into the beginning of the 1940s realism continues to be a strong factor in American painting, but with the European Surrealist artists in New York during the Second World War – a sense of Magic Realism enters the work of Paul Cadmus and Georges Tooker, and to a lesser extent it can be seen in the work of Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth.

Since Surrealism has an abstract as well as a ‘realist’ side, it is also partially responsible (together with the fact that Mondrian, too, is in New York) for the development of Abstract Expressionism. We trace the development of the Colour Field Abstract Expressionists : Rothko, Newman and Gottleib and that of the more gestural Expressionists (Action Painters) Hofmann, Gorky, De Kooning and Pollock (who dies in 1956) in an attempt to understand their motives.
