Canasta

Contact: Jane Evans

Canasta is a classic card game of matching, tactics and strategy. It was devised in Uruguay in 1939, spread to the US after the Second World War and then to the rest of the world. The word Canasta comes from the Spanish meaning ‘ basket’ which probably referred to the basket in which the stock and discard piles were held.

How many cards make a meld? What is natural Canasta? How many points if you collect all four red threes? What happens when the discard pile is ‘frozen’? These and other questions were frequent in the early meetings. Classic Canasta refers to the rules we adhere to, having been advised by the National Advisor for Canasta.

The aim is a social group, enjoying playing the game with a small amount of challenge! Having learned to play, members then facilitate the learning for newer players when they need it. The aim is fun!
New members of the group are taught how to play Canasta and advice shared. We hope that now there is little distinction between learners and experienced players.

If you enjoy playing for fun and enjoyment, this is a group for you. We meet twice a month- on the second and fourth Wednesday morning 10am to 12 noon at City URC.
