The group meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The meetings are usually held at the City URC Upper Room in Windsor Place.

Battle of Flodden 1513

This will look at what is a long forgotten but massively important battle in our history. It will look at Catherine of Aragon’s role as regent and left to deal with an opportunist French encouraged Scottish invasion whilst Henry the VIII was campaining in France.

Philip True Crime – Murder in the Tower

The courtier and poet Sir Thomas Overbury died in September 1613, a prisoner in the Tower of London. How did he die and why did he die? This is a story of political intrigue, sexual relationships and a grisly murder.

Ian Doyle La Reconquista de Buenos Aires

‘The Reconquest of Buenos Aires’ is a public painting on display in Buenos Aires depicting the surrender of Major General William Carr Beresford to Jacques de Liniers, a French Captain in the service of the King of Spain during the Napoleonic Wars. Ian will explain the relevance of the painting to Anglo-Argentine relations and the historical significance of the scene depicted in the painting

Talk on 24th June 2023

The next meeting of the History Group will be held next Wednesday 24th May at 2:00pm in the Upper Room at URC, Windsor Place, Cardiff.

Owen Parry will be talking about the Unification of Germany and Italy in 19th Century. We all know of Germany and Italy as unified countries at the start of the 20th Century but compare that with the situation at the start of the 19th and there is a big difference. Owen will explore how that came about in the next History Group talk.

Group Trip to Sedgemoor Battlefield Site 14th June 2023

The Sedgemoor trip is on 14th June. Details are as follows:

The cost will be £9 per person which will include:

•            Travel to and from Westzoyland

•            Tea/coffee on arrival

•            A visit to the Visitor Centre which uses graphic displays, touch screens and wall-mounted video screens to tell visitors the story of the Battle of Sedgemoor from its causes to its consequences

•            Introductory talk by local guide

•            Visit to the Sedgemoor Battlefield site led by the local guide.

•            All gratuities

We have now arranged for lunch with the local pub, the Sedgemoor Inn at your own cost. If you do not wish to have lunch at the pub, you can spend free time in the village of Sedgemoor.

The coach will leave from URC in Windsor Place. Please be at URC by 9:30 am. We will leave Westzoyland at about 3:15, aiming to be back at URC at about 4:15.

The Irish Revival and Revolt
